Dominant display from GB Boxers at this year’s Bocskai sees nine members of the squad return home with medals, including six gold

A dominant GB Boxing team has returned home from this year’s Bocskai Tournament in Hungary with nine medals, including six golds.

Ivy-Jane Smith (W54kg), Abdul Burton (M55kg), Mary-Kate Smith (W75kg), Kyle Shaw-Tullin (M75kg), Bobby Wallace (M80kg) and Matt Williams (M90kg) were all crowned champions after earning three or more victories during their week-long trip to Debrecen.

Elsewhere, Teagn Stott secured his first medal at his new weight of heavyweight (M90kg), taking silver, while bronze medals were claimed by Aaron Cullen (M55kg) and Vivien Parsons (W57kg).

The finals, which were spread across two days of action, were kick-started by bantamweight Ivy-Jane Smith, who secured a 4–1 victory over France’s Maloé Teresi in what was her fourth bout in as many days.

The same can be said for Bobby Wallace, who continued his form from last year—when he was crowned U23 European champion—as he also picked up his fourth victory of the week to clinch gold, beating Azerbaijan’s Hasan Osmanli by unanimous decision.

The other two gold medals on day one of the finals were secured by Mary-Kate Smith and Matt Williams, who, like Wallace, dominated their opponents in the final bouts to record 5–0 victories over the Czech Republic’s Monika Langerova and Hungary’s Mark Kovacs, respectively.

Moving into the final day, both Abdul Burton and Kyle Shaw-Tullin faced opponents from the host nation.

First up was Kyle Shaw-Tullin, who confidently dispatched Romeo Buza by unanimous decision in what was his third victory in four days.

Finally, Abdul Burton concluded the action for Great Britain’s boxers in Hungary by earning a 3–2 split decision over Gabor Virban in a closely fought bantamweight contest.

The performances of the GB Boxing team at this year’s Bocskai Tournament also saw England awarded the ‘Best Team of the Tournament’ trophy, outperforming other high-profile boxing nations such as France, Ukraine and Spain.
