Five more medals guaranteed as GB Boxers medal total reaches 11 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
FIVE more GB Boxers guaranteed themselves a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on day six in Glasgow, with Ruby White, Chantelle Reid, Sonny Kerr, Dimeji Shittu and Damar Thomas all winning their quarter final contests to book their places in the semi-finals.
It takes the total number of medals won by the team at Glasgow 2026 to 11, with the quintet joining Lauren Mackie, Lucy Kings-Wheatley, Sacha Hickey, Mary-Kate Smith, Patris Mughalzai and Isaac Okoh, who all secured their medals on day five.
There was disappointment for Elise Glynn, however, as her campaign came to an end in the women’s 57kg, narrowly losing out to India’s Jaismine Jaismine via a 4:1 split decision.
Ruby White got the day off to the perfect start, producing a dominant performance to defeat Uganda’s Angel Katushabe via unanimous decision in the women’s 51kg.
White said: “I couldn’t wait to get in the ring, and I can’t wait now to get back in the ring on Friday.
“To win this even with bronze but especially with gold to win this tournament, I think it’s going to prove to people that no matter, I know I’ve won a lot as a youth and junior, but I’m meant to be on these big stages and I’ve progressed up the levels up to an elite, and I deserve to be here.”
Chantelle Reid followed with an impressive display of her own, seeing off Northern Ireland’s Jansseen Hill via unanimous decision in the women’s 70kg.
Reid said: “It’s been about a week now I’ve had to wait but it felt good to get in the ring and get the first one done. The ring rust has come off now and, but the job’s not done yet so we go again on Friday.”
Sonny Kerr kept the momentum going, overcoming Samoa’s Marion Ah Tong via unanimous decision in the men’s 70kg.
Kerr said: “It was a good fight. I came forward a lot more than I thought. But I thought I boxed better, so it’s good. And I looking forward to the semifinals on Friday.”
Dimeji Shittu then made it four wins from five for the team, cruising to a unanimous decision victory over Kenya’s Robert Okaka in the men’s 80kg.
Shittu said: “I feel amazing. Commonwealth medal secured. Friday we go again and god willing, we change that colour.
“He was awkward. He had long arms like me, and he was throwing weird shots from weird angles, but I stuck to the game plan, kept my hands nice and high. Once I got comfy with my rhythm, I put on a show and that’s what I love to do.”
Rounding off a superb day for the team was Damar Thomas, who was awarded victory over Aziz Abdul via disqualification in round three of their men’s 90+kg contest after the Ugandan received continued warnings from the referee for using his head, which culminated in him firing two headbutts into Thomas before the contest was waved off.
Thomas said: “I’ve got the job done. Not got a lot of words on that. Not how I wanted to, but the job’s done. I can’t go back to the past and change how I just boxed then but I can change how I box on Friday and looking forward to Friday now.”
