Five set to compete for quota places at Paris 2024 in tomorrow’s final day of action in Busto Arsizio following memorable victories for MacDonald and Harris-Allan
GB BOXING’s Kiaran MacDonald and Owain Harris-Allan earned memorable victories on the penultimate day of action at the Boxing Road to Paris Olympic qualification event in Busto Arsizio to move to within one win of a place at Paris 2024.
It means they join teammates Chantelle Reid and Pat Brown as well as GB Boxing sparring partner, Cindy Ngamba in competing for a quote place in tomorrow’s final day of action at the E-Work Arena.
The only disappointment on the day however, came as Elise Glynn narrowly missed out on a place in the final round of competition after finding herself on the wrong end of a 4:1 split with Turkey’s Esra Yildiz.
The day was got off to a flyer though as Kiaran MacDonald but in hard fought performance against Rio 2016 Olympian, Rogen Ladon of the Philippines to earn a 4:1 victory in what was his third bout at the Olympic qualifying event.
He will now, for the final time in Italy, go up against Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov in tomorrow’s final day of action at 19:00pm.
MacDonald said: “He’s a former world medallist so I had to stick to the game plan and get it right because I know that on my day, I’m good enough to beat anyone.
“I’m back in the position I was in at the European Games being one fight away which shows I’m more than capable of being at the Olympic Games it’s just about getting the execution right against another great competitor, but I really believe in myself, and I’ve left no stone unturned in training and I’m going to give it my all.
“I’d like to say happy Mother’s Day to my mum. I’m going to get that ticket to Paris tomorrow and that can be your present and that can be your present!”
In the day’s evening session and competing for the third time, like MacDonald, Owain Harris-Allan put in another impressive display to confidently beat Uruguay’s Lucas Fernandez Garcia unanimously.
The only thing standing in the way of the Welshman and a ticket to Paris is Brazil’s Luiz Oliveira, who he faces at 19:30pm tomorrow.
Harris Allan said: “It’s what I do. Day in, day out whether it’s training or in competition, it’s business to me.
“He was a bit awkward, but we dealt with it and we move on to the last bout for qualification tomorrow and I’m more than ready to do what I need to do.
“It would mean so much to me. I know my mum would want me to get to Paris, so it’s what I’m going to make sure I do.
“It’s been the beginning of a great year. I’ve nine fights so far and won all nine of them and tomorrow we’re going to make it 10-0.”
In tomorrow’s final day of action, three boxers will join MacDonald and Harris-Allan in boxing for a quota place at Paris 2024.
First up is heavyweight Pat Brown who at 12:45pm will go head-to-head with Poland’s Mateusz Bereznicki.
Then, at 14:30pm and representing the refugee team is GB Boxing sparring partner, Cindy Ngamba, will face Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova.
She will be then swiftly followed at 14:45pm by fellow middleweight, Chantelle Reid. She will be up against Aziza Zokirova of Uzbekistan.
