GB Boxers set to box for gold tomorrow following successful day three at World Boxing Cup in Sheffield
A SUCCESSFUL day three at the World Boxing Cup: GB Open in Sheffield saw eleven members of the GB Boxing squad earn a place in tomorrow’s finals day.
Savannah Stubley, Lauren Mackie, Elise Glynn, Jack Dryden, Owain Harris Allan, Lucy Kings-Wheatley, Shona Whitwell, Joe Tyers, Patris Mughalzai, Lewis Richardson and Ramtin Musah were all crowned victors in their respective bouts in today’s action.
There was also a win for GB Boxing sparring partner Cindy Ngamba whilst Kiaran MacDonald and George Crotty were handed walkovers.
There was some disappointment on the day though as England’s Demie-Jade Resztan, Olivia Holmes and Kerry Davis as well as Wales’ Scott Richards suffered defeat.
The opening bout of day three in Sheffield saw GB Boxing teammates Demie-Jade Resztan and Savananah Stubley meet at light-flyweight.
There wasn’t much to separate the pair across the three rounds but in the end, it was Stubley who has given the decision by the judges via a 3:2 split decision.
She will now face Germany’s Maxi Klotzer in tomorrow’s final which is scheduled for 13:30pm.
Stubley said: “It was a tough contest up against Demie who is a close friend, I knew it was going to be close and I had to dig deep.
“I’ve had lots of help from coaches both at home and at GB so a big thank you to them and my sponsors also for giving me that support.
Up next was bantamweight Lauren Mackie who earned her second win in as many bouts as she got the better of Wales’ Zoe Andrews unanimously.
With the 54kg being ran as a round robin, Mackie will tomorrow face Sweden’s Zehra Milli at 14:10pm.
GB Boxing teammates Jack Dryden and Owain Harris Allan will box for featherweight gold tomorrow after the pair won their respective semi-final bouts against Holland’s Mahmoud Al Chabtoun and Germany’s Ousainou Hansen.
The duo will meet in tomorrow’s final at 11:15am.
That will also be the case at women’s lightweight as unanimous victories for both Lucy-Kings Wheatley and Shona Whitwell against German opponents mean they will go head-to-head for the gold medal at 10:55am.
Kings-Wheatley was up against Lena Buchner whilst Whitwell faced Ganglbauer.
Whitwell said: “It was a good bout. 5-0 across the board, I’m pleased with it.
“I need to remember to keep my shape, I was given a count but still won and I caught her with some good shots as well, so I need to tighten up there maybe.
“It is what it is (boxing versus Lucy). I knew that was going to come because we are both skillful boxers so ultimately the best one will win, we shall see tomorrow.”
At middleweight, GB Boxing training partner Cindy Ngamba outpointed Chantelle Reid unanimously to set up a clash at 11:25am with Panama’s Athenya Bylon.
This is after Bylon beat Great Britain’s Kerry Davis also by unanimous points decision in the other middleweight semi-final.
Boxing for the first time at the World Boxing Cup, Patrick Brown ended the day’s morning session in devastating fashion as he stopped future Paris 2024 Olympian, Adam Oloare of Nigeria, inside the third round following a trio of standing counts.
Brown said: “It was a good performance; the cobwebs are off now, and I felt that in the third round I was able to properly start boxing and I feel good for tomorrow.
“I know I’ve got the power and it’s about being smart and when you combine the two, that’s when you’re dangerous.
“It’s good to claim a scalp like that, it’s the second time I’ve beat him in the last few months, so it shows the level I’m performing at.”
Featherweight Elise Glynn was the first member of the squad to have her arm raised in the evening session when she unanimously beat Germany’s Canan Tas.
Glynn is now one win away from winning gold, with only Holland’s Maud Van Der Toorn, who beat GB Boxing’s Olivia Holmes in the other semi-final, standing in her way at 14:25pm.
Light-welterweights Joe Tyers and Patris Mughalzai ensured there will be another all GB final tomorrow after firstly Tyers came out on top of a fierce contest with Germany’s Assan Hansen 3:2, before Mughalzai confidently dispatched of Mongolia’s Tulga Oyunbaatar.
The GB duo will meet at 14:40pm tomorrow.
In just his second bout at a new weight, Lewis Richardson earned another victory, this time against Czech Republic’s Kelvin Soquessa, to reach tomorrow’s final.
It means he will have to beat Denmark’s European Games champion, Nikolai Terteryan at 14:55pm to clinch gold.
Ramtin Musah brought a close to proceeding for Great Britain with an assured display against Germany’s Ben Ehis, as he sealed a unanimous win.
Musah will compete for a gold medal against teammate George Crotty in the light-heavyweight final at 15:10pm in the fourth and final, all GB bout.
It comes after Crotty was handed his second successive walkover, this time as another teammate, Taylor Bevan, withdrew from the semi-final due to injury.
The final boxers set to compete in tomorrow’s final day of action are flyweight Kiaran MacDonald and welterweight Dione Burman.
MacDonald will complete his round robin against Germany’s Salah Ibrahim at 10:00am whilst Burman will be appearing for the first time due to low entry numbers when she faces Germany’s Leonie Muller at 11:10am.
Tickets for the final day of the “World Boxing Cup: GB Open – Sheffield 2024” are still now officially sold out.
