GB Boxing pays tribute to Dave Pocknell following recent passing

Everyone at GB Boxing is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David Pocknell, a well-respected coach, mentor, and influential figure in British boxing whose impact extended far beyond results in the ring.

Dave spent a number of years working with the World Class Programme (WCP) at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, both as a full-time employee and later as a performance coach.

His connection to boxing spanned decades, and throughout his life he was widely admired for his depth of knowledge, clarity of thought, and ability to bring out the very best in the athletes and coaches he worked with.

Dave’s legacy lives on in the many boxers he coached, the coaches he worked alongside, and the wider boxing community that benefitted from his wisdom and humanity.

GB Boxing extends its heartfelt condolences to Dave’s family and friends at this difficult time.

GB Boxing Performance Director, Rob McCracken, said: “Dave was a fantastic coach with world-class ability who, in particular, played a big part with the GB team that competed at the Beijing Olympics. He coached at every level and always brought the same drive and passion, whether he was working with elite athletes or complete novices.

I remember him spending a full weekend with novice female boxers and coaching them as if they were preparing for the Olympics – and that just sums up who he was.

“He had huge experience, from his time as an England coach to contributing to the GB Boxing setup and even working overseas. Dave was dedicated, committed, and a genuinely great person who helped to develop so many boxers in this country. My thoughts and best wishes go out to his family.”
