Orie earns second victory at 2023 European Games to reach quarter-final on difficult day for GB Boxers
SUPER-HEAVYWEIGHT Delicious Orie secured his second victory of the competition to move one step closer to securing Olympic qualification.
The victory from Orie came on what was a difficult day five for the team of boxers at the 2023 European Games as Demie-Jade Resztan, Elise Glynn and Jack Dryden as well as Cindy Ngamba, boxing for the Refugee team, suffered defeats.
2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Orie was the final member of the team to box when he faced Norway’s Omar Shiha.
The 26-year-old was able to assert his dominance throughout the bout to seal a unanimous victory to tee up a quarter-final clash with Armenia’s 2021 world silver medallist, Davit Chaloyan, tomorrow, where a win will move him to within one bout of Paris 2024 status.
Orie said: “I felt good in there. I’ll come across a lot sharper next time. Like I said previously, a win is a win, so I’m happy.
“I’m one step closer to my dream. One step closer to representing Team GB at the Olympic Games.
“I’m going to continue to fight hard. I’ll rest up and go again tomorrow.”
Team GB’s Demie-Jade Resztan and Elise Glynn and GB Boxing training partner Cindy Ngamba were all unlucky to not have their last 16 results go in their favour.
First up was Resztan, who despite putting in a solid display, was judged to have beaten unanimously by Italy’s Giordana Sorrentino.
Featherweight Elise Glynn also faced an Italian, current World and European champion, Irma Testa.
It was the third time in less than a year that the pair had met in the ring and once again, Glynn did not let her opponent’s accolades intimidate her as she, like Resztan, she boxed well throughout and on multiple occasions had the better of the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist.
However, it was not to be for the 21-year-old, losing via an incredibly narrow 3:2 split.
Despite a strong dominant few rounds, Ngamba, representing the Refugee team, was edged out against Ireland’s two-time European champion, Aoife O’Rourke, in another close contest that could have gone either way.
Jack Dryden was the other British boxer to lose on day five in Poland, he was beaten by Frederik Jensen of Denmark unanimously.
FOUR boxers, including Delicious Orie, will compete in tomorrow’s (Wednesday 28th June) quarterfinal bouts with TWO of them marked as Paris 2024 qualification contests.
At 12:00pm, Charley Davison will box with the opportunity to become a two-time Olympian should she beat Sweden’s Zehra Milli.
Following Davison is Wales’ Rosie Eccles who, after suffering Tokyo 2020 qualification heartbreak could make her dream of becoming an Olympian a reality with a victory over Amy Broadhurst of Ireland.
Concluding the afternoon session is flyweight Kiaran MacDonald. He takes on Serbia’s Omer Anetovic. A victory for the North-East boxer would see him move to within one win of securing Olympic qualification.
