Tokyo Olympian Cheavon Clarke joins the board of GB Boxing as an athlete representative

Cruiserweight prospect is one of series of new board appointments

TOKYO Olympian and professional cruiserweight prospect, Cheavon Clarke, is one of a series of recent appointments to the board of GB Boxing, which manages and oversees Great Britain’s Olympic boxing programme.

Clarke spent more than four years in the GB Boxing squad and won European championship medals in 2017 and 2019 and a bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Following an open recruitment process, he has been appointed as the Athlete Representative Independent Director, with specific responsibility for ensuring the perspective of boxers is heard and taken into account at board-level.

He is one of six new additions to the GB Boxing board since June 2025 and is joined by four other independent directors, Mahdi Choudhury, Lynne Murray, Andy Roe and Rani Wynn, along with Jason Harborow, who is the new representative of Welsh Boxing.

The appointments follow last year’s restructure of the GB Boxing board which was designed to increase its independence and bring a broader range of expertise into decision making.

It means the board is now made-up of an independent Chair, Jason Glover, six independent directors, including an Athlete Representative, one person from each of the three national governing bodies for boxing in England, Scotland and Wales, and GB Boxing’s Chief Executive, Matt Holt.

Cheavon Clarke said: “GB Boxing has been a big part of my life and played an important part in helping me to develop as both a boxer and a person, so it is great to be able to give something back and have the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to shape the future development of the WCP and ensure that the views of athletes play an important role in board level decision making.”

Jason Glover added: “I am very happy with the skills and experience of all the people that have joined the board in recent months and am sure that they will all play an important role in the future development of the organisation and enable GB Boxing to go from strength to strength and maintain its status as one of Great Britain’s most admired WCPs. They all have a track record of excellence and outstanding achievements in their chosen fields, and I am looking forward to working closely with each of the new Directors as we build to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The six new board members are:

Cheavon Clarke, Independent Director – Athlete Representative

After winning the England national title at heavyweight in 2016 (where he defeated former cruiserweight world champion, Chris Billam Smith in the final), Clarke joined the GB Boxing squad in 2017 and won silver at that year’s European championships in Kharkiv.  He went on to win a bronze for England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast and another for Team GB at the 2019 European Games in Minsk. He qualified for the delayed Tokyo Olympics (which took place in 2021) but did not win a medal and departed the GB Boxing squad post-Games to turn professional where he boxes at cruiserweight and has won 11 of his 13 contests.
