Boxers return from Silesian tournament with five medals, including three golds

GREAT Britain’s women have returned home from last week’s Silesian tournament in Poland with five medals, including golds for Lucy Kings Wheatley, Sacha Hickey and Amber Moss-Birch.

The other medals were won by Sameenah Toussaint and Dione Burman who had to settle for silver after reaching their respective featherweight and welterweight finals.

On the penultimate day of competition, Amber Moss-Birch was crowned champion after she beat Sofia Stigen Sorensen of Norway in the light-heavyweight youth final.

The reigning youth world champion also beat the host nation’s Julia Borowczyk on her way to the top of the podium, in what was her first tournament as a GB Boxer.

Moving onto the final day of action and both Lucy Kings-Wheatley and Sacha Hickey earned unanimous victories against Kazakhstan’s Aida Abikeyeva and Switzerland’s Anna Jenni respectively to make it two gold medals from two tournaments since joining GB Boxing earlier this year.

The pair won their first golds at the Boxam back in May.

The similarities continued for the British duo as they were both involved in three bouts during the duration of the tournament.

Kings-Wheatley beat the host’s Sandra Kruk in her opening bout before sealing her place in the final with a win over Germany’s Aylin Ozcelik.

Whilst Hickey wasted no time in making her mark on proceedings as she forced the ref to call a halt to her bout with Paulina Wrobel inside the first round. She then followed it up with an equally impressive semi-final display against Laura Esengeldi of Kazakhstan.

Toussaint and Burman were the other two boxers in action on finals day but were both beaten unanimously by Kazakhstan’s Viktoriya Grafeyeva and France’s Emilie Sonvico.

England Boxing also took a team to compete at the Silesian. Four boxers travelled with three picking up medals.

Flyweight Ivy-Jane Smith won gold whilst Ella Thompstone and Chantelle Reid earned bronze.
