GB Boxers return from Tammer with three medals

BOXERS from the GB Boxing squad have returned from the Tammer Tournament in Finland with three medals which includes a gold for Lewis Richardson.

After winning three bouts in as many days, the middleweight was also handed the best technical boxer award.

Teammates Ramtin Musah at light-heavyweight and Patrick Brown at heavyweight were also in action on finals day, with both settling for a silver medal.

First to step through the ropes on the final day of action was Richardson. The boxer from Colchester had beaten both Rio 2016 bronze medallist Mohammed Rabii and Wales’ Orlando Holley-Sotomi unanimously to reach the gold medal match in Tampere.

To secure his place on the top of the podium, he had to beat Sweden’s Erik Mendoza and once again the European silver medallist perfectly outboxed his opponent to seal the gold.

Next up was Musah, who after defeating Wales’ Haaris Khan, faced Brazil’s Isais Filho. In a fiercely contested bout, it was the Brazilian who did just enough in the eyes of the judges to seal victory via a 3:2 split decision.

It means that Musah has now taken medals at all three of the tournaments he has added this calendar year, having taken silver and bronze respectively at the Boxam and Belgrade winner competitions.

Concluding the day was Patrick Brown, who was competing in his first international tournament since joining the squad earlier this year.

The heavyweight was handed a tough task in his heavyweight final as he went up against the 2021 world silver medallist Keno Machado of Brazil and despite his best efforts it was Machado who did was able to seal the gold, winning unanimously.

Light-welterweight Patris Mulghalzai and welterweight Owen Rees made their GB Boxing debuts in Finland however both were beaten narrowly in the preliminary stages.
