GB Boxers return from this year’s Boxam with 11 medals, including four gold
BOXERS from Great Britain have returned from this year’s Boxam in La Nucia, Spain, with 11 medals including four golds.
The gold were claimed by England’s Sacha Hickey, Amber Moss-Birch and Isaac Okoh as well as Wales’ Owain Harris Allan.
The remaining seven medals were bronze as Kelsey Oakley, Aaron Cullen, Ellis Trowbridge, Lucy Kings-Wheatley, Cameron McKay, Dionne Burman were beaten in the semi-final bouts with the final medallist, Conner Tudsbury, withdrawing from his semi-final due to injury.
Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan won all four of his bouts in Spain to be crowned featherweight champion making it two golds from as many tournaments in 2024, following his success at the inaugural World Boxing Cup in January.
Harris-Allan, on his way to beating Mexico’s Andrey Banilla via a 3:2 split decision in the final, also defeated Cuba’s highly rated World youth medallist, Ewart Andres Hernandez at the semi-final stages.
The Welshman also beat Italy’s Francesco Iozia and Poland’s Jaroslaw Iwanow during the five-day long competition.
There was also similar success for cruiserweight Isaac Okoh as he sealed his second consecutive gold medal at the Boxam, following victory at last year’s November event, after he defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Bekzhigit Uulu Omerbek unanimously.
Okoh also beat Romania’s Paul Andrei Aradoaie via a 3:2 split on his way to reaching this year’s final.
Elsewhere on finals day, Sacha Hickey was the first member of the GB Boxing team to be crowned champion as the welterweight, appearing for the first time in Spain due to low participation numbers, beat Kazakhstan’s Abikeyeva Aida via unanimous points decision.
Light-heavyweight Amber Moss-Birch soon followed in her footsteps as she too secured a unanimous victory in her opening bout to wrap up the fourth and final gold medal. She was facing another boxer from Kazakhstan, Sholtay Fariza.
Scott Richards, Harris Akbar and Delicious Orie were also in action in La Nucia but failed to reach the medal stages.
