Glynn and Brown score unanimous victories on mixed day five of Olympic qualifying event in Busto Arsizio
ENGLAND’s Elise Glynn and Patrick Brown put in convincing performances in what was their opening bouts of the Boxing Road to Paris Olympic qualifying event to earn their place in the next round of the competition.
It was a day of mixed fortunes however as Patris Mughalzai just missed out on a place in the next round following a narrow 4:1 split defeat to Ali Habibnezhad.
Featherweight, Glynn, got the day off to a perfect start when she comfortably outboxed Latvia’s Jekaterina Sorokina to earn a 5-0 victory in her opening bout of the competition.
She will be straight back into the ring tomorrow when she faces China’s Xu Zichun at 20:45pm.
Glynn said: “It feels amazing. It’s a stepping stone towards the Olympic dream against a good opponent. The ring rust is off now.
“It’s a dream come true to be selected as a number one boxer for Great Britain and be at this event to hopefully qualify for the Olympic Games. Obviously, all the girls are top level and are all wanting to achieve the same as me so I’ve got to keep pushing.
“I’ve never had an easy draw, I’ve got to make the top two but I’m ready, been training hard and putting blood, sweat and tears into so three more bouts to go and hopefully I can do it.”
In the evening session, Pat Brown dominated his bout with North Macedonia’s Boban Ilioski in the heavyweight contest to ease his way to a unanimous points victory.
He will now box Luis Sanchez of Venezuela in Saturday’s action at 20:15pm.
Brown said: “They cobwebs are off but I’m not happy yet, I will be when I get my ticket to Paris. I now turn my focus to Saturday; we get through that then it’s all eyes on Monday and getting qualified. I’m not satisfied here yet.
“I’ve had a while to wait to box and that plays a part but it’s part of the game. I’ve felt the ring now and got the vibe of the place and I’m itching to get back in there now.”
Two other boxers from Great Britain will join Elise Glynn by competing in Friday’s action at the E-Work Arena in Busto Arsizio.
Boxing for the first time in the competition, flyweight Savannah Stubley goes up against Japan’s Rinka Kinoshita at 15:15pm whilst Owain Harris-Allan returns to the ring looking to earn his second victory this week against New Zealand’s Alex Mukuka at 21:30pm.
