Glynn and Harris-Allan a step closer to earning Olympic qualification following memorable victories in Busto Arsizio
GREAT BRITAIN’s Elise Glynn and Owain Harris-Allan earned memorable victories in their second outings at the Boxing Road to Paris event to move a step closer to becoming Paris 2024 Olympians.
There was some disappointment however on day six in Busto Arisizio, Italy, as Savannah Stubley suffered a unanimous defeat at the hands of Japan’s Rinka Kinoshita.
In the day’s evening session, Elise Glynn put in an outstanding performance against China’s Xu Zichun to clinch victory in what was a fiercely contested bout.
The featherweight was down on the judges’ scorecards after the opening round but fought back, to seal a 3:2 victory and set up a quarter-final clash with Turkey’s Kahraman Yildiz on Sunday at 18:15pm.
Glynn said: “It amazing to win that, I could literally cry! I’m halfway to the Olympic dream. She was a world class operator, and I knew I was up against, but I dug deep, especially in that last round, to get the victory.
“It gives me so much confidence looking ahead but that said, I don’t look too far into the future. I’ve always got an underdog mentality and I’ll always bring my game to whoever is in front of me. I’m ready for this, this is my time.
“I’ve not had it easy; I’ve got to get to that number two spot, but I’ll be working as hard as I possibly can to get there.”
Up next and concluding the day’s action., Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan eased to a unanimous victory against New Zealand’s Alex Mukaka to join his teammate, Glynn, in moving to within two bouts of becoming an Olympian.
He will now face Uruguay’s Lucas Alexander Fernandez Garcia on Sunday at 19:15pm.
Harris-Allan said: “My second win out of the way and two to go until I can change my life and I’m more than ready to go and do that.
“I feel good going into fights and I’m feeling good after them as well and I can’t wait for the next one.
“I just need to keep myself composed. I won the first round and could easily got involved in what he was trying to do but I stuck at it and got the job done.”
World qualifier action continues tomorrow (Saturday 9th March) and up first is GB Boxing partner, Cindy Ngamba, who will take on Korea’s Seong Suyeon at 13:30pm in Ring A.
Chantelle Reid will also box at 13:30pm but in Ring B. She faces Viviane Pereira of Brazil.
Concluding the day’s action is heavyweight Pat Brown against Venezuela’s Luis Sanchesz at 20:15pm.
Victories for all three would move them within one bout of securing their place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
