Nine men and women from GB Boxing squad to compete at first World Boxing Cup event of 2026 in Brazil
NINE boxers from the GB Boxing squad are set to compete in the first World Boxing Cup event of 2026 which will be held in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, 20 – 26 April 2026.
Up to 400 boxers from over 50 countries are expected to take part in the competition which will provide a stern test to the three women and six men from the GB Boxing squad that have been selected to compete.
It is the second time that Brazil has hosted the first World Boxing Cup event of the calendar year and follows last year’s competition, when boxers from Great Britain returned with eight medals, including a gold for Sacha Hickey (W65kg) who has been selected for next week’s competition.
Hickey said: “I’m really happy to be selected again for the World Boxing Cup in Brazil. I have great memories from the tournament last year after winning gold, so it’s a competition I’m really looking forward to going back to.
“That experience gives me a lot of confidence, but I know there will be strong opposition again this time. It’s another important opportunity for me to test myself, keep improving and build on the progress I’ve made over the past year.”
The other women that have been selected are Lauren Mackie (W54kg) and 2025 World Boxing Championship bronze medallist, Chantelle Reid (W70kg) who will both be looking to build on their most recent performances at February’s Strandja tournament in Bulgaria, where they won silver and gold respectively.
The men’s line-up is comprised of Ellis Trowbridge (M55kg), Will Hewitt (M60kg), Patris Mughalzai (M65kg), Paddy Hewitt (M70kg), Dimeji Shittu (M80kg) and Teagn Stott (M90kg).
For, Sheffield’s Teagn Stott, who won cruiserweight (M85kg) silver at last year’s World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, it will be a third outing at heavyweight (M90kg) as he looks to consolidate his position at the new weight by building on the silver medal he won last time out at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Hungary.
Stott said: “I’m really pleased to have been selected for the World Boxing Cup in Brazil. It’s a great opportunity to test myself against some top-level international opponents and gain more experience on the big stage.
“Every tournament like this is another step in my development, especially as I continue to grow into the heavyweight division. The aim is to keep improving with each bout, take on each challenge that comes and hopefully that puts me in a good position for the future looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games and beyond.”
The GB Boxing team is expected to approach the tournament in confident mood, after a strong showing in the recently published World Boxing rankings posted in March, which placed five of the group in the top ten in the world in their respective weight categories.
After his silver medal in Liverpool, Stott is ranked two in the world at cruiserweight, while Chantelle Reid is fourth at light-middleweight, with Sacha Hickey ranked seventh at welterweight. The two other men with a top 10 ranking are Will Hewitt, who is seventh at lightweight (M60kg) and Dimeji Shittu, who is sixth at light-heavyweight (M80kg).
Performance Director Rob McCracken said: “We’re looking forward to the World Boxing Cup in Brazil. It’s a good opportunity for the boxers to compete against strong international opposition and continue their development in a championship environment.
“We’ve had a solid period of preparation, and this kind of tournament gives us a clear indication of where the boxers are, the level they’re operating at, and what they need to improve on as we get ready for a busy few months with the Commonwealth Games and European Championships to come later this year.”
