Resztan takes bronze as 2022 Womens European Championships concludes for GB Boxers
DEMIE-JADE Resztan will leave the 2022 Womens European Championships with a bronze medal following a semi-final defeat in Budva, Montenegro.
The 25-year-old is the only member of the squad of seven women to earn a place on the podium, with teammates Shona Whitwell and Rosie Eccles narrowly missing out on the chance to join her after being beaten by eventual finalists Kellie Harrington of Ireland and Aneta Rygielska in their respective quarter-final bouts.
On the penultimate day of action, after beating the reigning world champion, Turkey’s Ayse Cagirir, to guarantee herself a medal, Resztan took on 2019 European bronze medallist, Roberta Bonatti of Italy.
It was a close affair between the two minimumweights however it was Bonatti who got the decision on the day via a split decision (4:1).
Performance Director, Rob McCracken said: “Demie has done really well to win a bronze medal and we have also seen some excellent performances from some of our less experienced boxers.
“Shona has performed superbly winning two bouts against good opposition and was just edged-out before the medal stages in a close bout against the Olympic Champion.
“Elise and Savannah have also boxed really well against top class opponents and both gave a very good account of themselves, given they were both making their debut at a major tournament.
“The Europeans is always a difficult assignment but the performances of the boxers means we can take a lot of positives from the tournament and look forward with optimism.”
