Whitwell secures unanimous victory on mixed opening day for GB Boxers at women’s European Championship

ENGLAND’S Shona Whitwell earned the team’s first victory at the EUBC women’s European Boxing Championships on a mixed opening day which saw Charley Davison defeated.

Competing for the first time in Budva, Montenegro, Whitwell took on Italy’s Alessia Messiano in the lightweight contest.

The St Ives boxer put in an impressive display, dominating the bout on her way to securing a unanimous point victory.

She will be straight back into the ring when action resumes tomorrow when she faces Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden at approximately 18.00 UK time.

There was disappointment on the opening day however as Tokyo 2020 Olympian Charley Davison went up against Greece’s Antonia Giannakopoulou.

In a fiercely contested bout which could have gone either way, it was the Greek who sealed a narrow split victory (3:2) meaning Davison exits the bantamweight contest at the round of 32 stage.

Featherweight Elise Glynn joins teammate Whitwell in tomorrow’s action.

Having recently faced each other at last month’s Balkan tournament, Glynn at 14.00 will once again face Irma Testa of Italy.

Last time out, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist got the better of the England boxer via a tight split victory.
