Second win in as many days for Whitwell secures place in lightweight quarter-final

SHONA Whitwell sealed her second win in as many days to reach the lightweight quarter-final at the European Championships in Budva on a day that also unfortunately saw Elise Glynn bow out of the competition.

Competing on day two of action in Montenegro, after beating Italy’s Alessia Messiano yesterday (Friday 14th October), Whitwell entered the ring once again, this time against Sweden’s Agnes Alexiusson.

The boxer from St Ives followed up her unanimous victory with yet another solid display, winning the round of 16 tie via split decision (4:1).

She will now face Ireland’s Tokyo 2020 gold medallist, Kellie Harrington on Monday, where a victory would guarantee her at least a bronze medal.

Elise Glynn was the other boxer in action. She took on Italy’s Irma Testa for the second time in a month following their clash at the recent Balkan tournament.

On that occasion it was the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist who came out on top via a narrow-split decision and again in Budva it was another close bout between the two featherweights with Glynn more than matching her opponent despite her lack of senior experience.

However once again it was Testa who did just enough to get the nod from the judges to progress to the next round via another close 3:2 split.

No boxers from the GB Boxing team compete in tomorrow’s action. Stay tuned across our social platforms for details on Monday’s (17th October) bouts.
