White, Kerr and Shittu reach quarter finals on day of mixed fortunes for GB Boxers at Glasgow 2026
RUBY WHITE marked her Commonwealth Games and GB Boxing debut in style on day four in Glasgow, as she, alongside Dimeji Shittu and Scotland’s Sonny Kerr secured victories to reach the quarter final stages.
It means the trio are now one win away from guaranteeing a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
There was some disappointment on day four however as both Will Hewitt and Paddy Hewitt saw their campaigns come to an end in the morning session both via 4:1 split defeats via India’s Sachin Sachin and Wales’ Orlando Holley-Sotomi respectively.
Earning the first win for the team on day four was Ruby White.
The 19-year-old flyweight produced a dominant performance to defeat South Africa’s Thandolwethu Mathiba via a unanimous 5:0 decision in the women’s 51kg.
White said: “I’m over the moon, to be honest. It’s been my dream since I was seven years old to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. I worked it all out when I was younger, figuring out when I’d be old enough to compete, so it’s a dream to be here.
Obviously, there were a little bit of nerves, just because of the size of the tournament really, and wanting to make everyone proud and make myself proud. But I couldn’t really ask for a better fight. I’ll be better for my next performance because that was far from what I can do.”
GB team-mate Sonny Kerr followed with a hard-fought win of his own, edging out Kenya’s Boniface Maina on a 3:0 split decision in the men’s 70kg in a closely contested bout.
Dimeji Shittu then rounded off a strong evening for the team, cruising to a comfortable 5:0 unanimous decision victory over Uganda’s Alfred Ojok in the men’s 80kg.
Day five sees the team hit the quarter final stages, with seven boxers in action across the day and every one of them able to guarantee themselves a medal with a win.
Lauren Mackie opens the session against Wales’ Helen Jones in the women’s 54kg at 12pm.
She is followed by Ellis Trowbridge, who faces Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed in the men’s 55kg at 1:30pm.
The evening session gets underway with Lucy Kings-Wheatley taking on Sierra Leone’s Josefien Betist in the women’s 60kg at 6:45pm.
Sacha Hickey is in action next, boxing India’s Parveen Parveen in the women’s 65kg at 7pm.
Mary-Kate Smith follows in the women’s 75kg against Nigeria’s Patricia Mbata at 7:30pm.
Patris Mughalzai then faces Uganda’s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg at 8:15pm.
Rounding off the day is Isaac Okoh, who takes on Australia’s Lachlan Lawson in the men’s 90kg at 8:45pm.
