English trio move step closer to Commonwealth Games medal following victories on day three at Glasgow 2026
LAUREN MACKIE, Ellis Trowbridge and Patris Mughalzai all moved to within one win of guaranteeing themselves a Commonwealth Games medal, after they secured their second victories of the tournament on day three of the boxing competition to reach the quarter final stages at Glasgow 2026.
Mackie was made to work for it in the women’s 54kg, coming from behind on the scorecards to defeat Australia’s Monique Suraci via a 3:2 split decision.
The Englishwoman had trailed after the opening two rounds but produced a big finish, taking the third round unanimously on all five judges’ cards to turn the contest around and book her place in the next round.
She will now take on Wales’ Helen Jones at 12pm on Tuesday 28th in the bantamweight quarter final.
Mackie said: “It was a close going into that last round. It could have gone either way when it’s a one round fight. I heard from the corner that I need to keep it long, keep it your range and that’s what I did and it gave me that five nil round.
“When you’re in there and they’re bringing a fight to you, it’s like the enjoyment as well of being toe-to-toe but you’re in there to get your job done. So that last round is stanying disciplined and making sure we go into that last round.
“I can stay disciplined. My mind’s still focused, my body still prime and it just prepares me for the next bouts and it gives me confidence and momentum looking ahead.”
Trowbridge followed that up with an impressive performance of his own in the men’s 55kg, seeing off Sri Lanka’s Rukmal Prasanna via a comfortable 4:0 split decision victory to make it back-to-back wins at these Games.
The win books his place in the bantamweight quarter finals where he will face Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed on Tuesday at 1:30pm.
Trowbridge said: “The corner kept me composed, kept me relaxed, picked my shots and showed my superior skill. Sometimes I forget about that but look, smashed it there.
“That’s two from two now. And next fight I fight for a medal. And I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a cracking fight and the crowd are going to go wild. Expect fireworks!
“My family is going to be here supporting, and my friends are going to be supporting. And ultimately, I’m going to be ready. And the main thing is, I know that I’m going to give everything that I’ve got.”
Patris Mughalzai (ENG) capped off a strong day for the team in the evening session, defeating Northern Ireland’s John Paul Hale in the men’s 65kg via a unanimous 5:0 decision to make it three wins from three on day three.
He will face Uganda’s Nuhhu Batte in the quarter finals.
There is a busy day four ahead for the team tomorrow, with four boxers in action across the day’s sessions.
First up is Will Hewitt, who takes on India’s Sachin Sachin in the men’s 60kg at 12:15.
He is followed by twin brother Paddy Hewitt, who faces Wales’ Orlando Holley-Sotomi in the men’s 70kg at 12:45.
Moving into the evening session, Ruby White will compete in the women’s 51kg against South Africa’s Thandolwethu Mathiba at 18:15.
Concluding the day’s action is Dimeji Shittu, who takes on Uganda’s Alfred Ojok in the men’s 80kg at 20:45.
