Clean sweep of victories for GB Boxers on opening day of 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
Four wins from four on the opening day of boxing action at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, saw Lauren Mackie, Ellis Trowbridge, Lucy Kings-Wheatley and Patris Mughalzai all progress in style at the SEC Arena in Scotland.
Mackie got the entire boxing competition underway, stepping out for the very first bout of the Games in the women’s 54kg category.
The Northampton boxer produced a polished display against Kenya’s Amina Faki, taking a unanimous 5-0 decision to open her campaign with a win.
She will now face Australia’s Monique Suraci in the last 16 on Sunday at 11:00am.
Speaking after her win, Mackie said: “It feels great. The first one’s always the toughest with the nerves and everything, but we’ve got that out of the way. I’ve got confidence going into the next one now, with the momentum carrying us through.”
There was an even quicker start for Trowbridge in the men’s 55kg, who needed just 90 seconds to see off Vanuatu’s Ricksen Nomleas.
The referee stepped in to wave off the contest in the first round following explosive start from the Surbiton boxer, handing hi, a stoppage victory (RSC) to book his place in the next round where he will face Sri Lanka’s Rukmal Prasanna for a place in the quarter finals.
Trowbridge was in confident mood afterwards, saying: “Fantastic start to the tournament. Like I said earlier, I’m not here to play about. I’m going in there to do a job, and if I feel I can get you out of there, that’s what I’m going to do. I’ve missed that little killer instinct in the past, and I’m bringing it to these Commonwealth Games.
“Ultimately, I’m just going to keep stepping it up. The opposition will get stronger, of course, but I’m world level. I’m the man to beat in this tournament, and that’s no secret. I’m going in there to make a statement every single time, be myself, back my family, and do my country proud. We’ve started strong.”
The third win of the day for the team came in the evening session, as lightweight Lucy Kings-Wheatley got the better of Papua New Guinea’s Petronella Nokenoke, taking a comfortable unanimous 5-0 decision.
The win for Kings-Wheatley means she will now box for a medal on Tuesday at 6:45pm when she takes on Sierra Leone’s Joefien Betist in the 60kg quarter final.
Patris Mughalzai then rounded off a perfect day for the team, defeating Ghana’s two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Wahib Omar in the welterweight contest on a unanimous decision to make it four wins from four on the opening day of competition.
He will now go head-to-head on Sunday with Northern Ireland’s John Paul Hale at 8:45pm.
That brings a superb Day One at the SEC Arena to a close, with all four English boxers in action securing victories.
The team will be back in action on Sunday when Lauren, Ellis and Patris compete in their last 16 contests.
